Situated in Plaka, a charming village in the Elounda region of Eastern Crete, widely known as a holiday destination with plenty of luxury hotels, the “Island View Villas” complex is developed to answer the area’s need for superior quality permanent residences. The location offers spectacular views, overlooking the village of Plaka and the island of Spinalonga, with its Venetian fortress and rich history, whose past provided the setting for Victoria Hislop’s recent bestseller “The Island”. Because of its archaeological and architectural importance, the island of Spinalonga functioned as a key reference for the project.
Plaka is approximately one hour’s drive from Heraklion International Airport. The complex is only five minutes on foot from the village, where a variety of waterfront taverns offer fresh seafood and traditional Greek and Cretan delicacies. The nearby “Blue Palace Hotel” also offers an excellent spa and a choice of fine restaurants.
The local traditional architecture, which is mainly influenced by the natural conditions and the materials available on the island, was the main inspiration for the developer. The combination of whitewashed walls with gray local stone, the timber elements and the cubic, flat-roofed forms of the local architecture are typical of the rural landscape outside the main cities of Crete.
These “themes” were used as points of reference and inspired the design concept and implementation. Finally, the local way of life, which suggests the equal use of indoor and outdoor spaces, guided the planning of each individual residence. The complex integrates advanced design aesthetics that blend perfectly into the local terrain and minimize the burden on the natural environment.
Creating thus a new ‘eco-chic’ destination in Elounda, the “Island View Villas” complex enhances the region’s commercial and real estate profile.
